Türkiye’s bid to gain EU recognition of döner kebab as a traditional product has been met with objections from Germany. In response, Bereket Döner has presented an academic study asserting döner’s Turkish origins and cultural significance.
During a press conference in Istanbul on 5th December, Bereket Döner showcased historical evidence supporting Türkiye’s application to the European Commission.
“Our research demonstrates that döner is deeply rooted in Turkish history and culture,” said Mevlüt Ceyhun Tekdemir, Vice Chairman of Bereket Döner’s Board. “From Takiyeddin Efendi’s 16th-century mechanical drawings to insights from Evliya Çelebi, our evidence leaves no doubt about döner’s origins. We trust the European Commission to recognise this heritage appropriately.”
The study, Türkiye’s World-Famous Delicacy: Döner, traces the dish’s roots to the Ottoman period, highlighting its role as a culinary and cultural connector.
Celebrating Unity Through Food
“Döner is not about division; it’s about unity,” Tekdemir added. “It’s a culinary tradition that brings people together, blending cultures and tastes in a unique way.”
Bereket Döner also announced its European expansion plans, starting with new Döner Point locations in Germany, as part of its mission to share authentic Turkish döner with a wider audience.
“We’re excited to bring the true taste of Turkish döner to Europe,” remarked Tekdemir. “Our expansion strategy reflects our commitment to preserving and sharing this cultural treasure with the world.”
These efforts reflect Bereket Döner’s dedication to safeguarding Turkish culinary heritage and fostering international appreciation for döner kebab.
